Practical advices on energy-saving

A subject of careful attitude to electric energy is popular today as never before. This is connected, first of all, with the fact that every year electric energy consumption increases, building-up of facilities for its production creates more and more ecological problems: atmosphere pollution, violation of thermal balance of the planet, ozone layer destruction. In a scale of whole countries special energy-saving programs are developed, designers create household devices with a reduced electric energy consumption, significant material resources are expended to reduce ecological load connected with electric power stations activity.

However, everyone of us, observing uncomplicated rules of civilized handling of electric devices in everyday life, is able to make a considerable contribution to the energy economy cause. At that, not only without spending any means but also making a private profit in the form of significant reduction of electric energy payment expenses. 

We are glad to offer you a dozen of useful advices how to achieve this. And a bonus tip from "Kosmos" brand... 

1. Do not leave equipment in a stand-by mode (an "expecting" mode).

Use on/off buttons provided on the equipment or disconnect the equipment from the plug socket. Disconnection of unused devices from power supply circuit  (for example, a TV set, a videotape recorder, a music centre) allows to reduce power consumption in average to 300 kWt-h per year and to save up to 80 UAH.

A TV set with a medium size screen - with diagonal of 20-21" in stand-by mode consumes 75 mA (milliampere) current, with the voltage on a electric energy network equal to 220 V (volt). Hence, the power consumed, according to Ohm's law P=I*U (power measured in watts, current in amperes and voltage in volts), by our "sleeping" TV set is: Р = 0,075 x 220 = 16,5 Wt. If you watch TV 6 hours a day then its consumption in stand-by mode (18 hours) amounts 297 Wt-h per day, and per month - 8910 that is almost 9 kWt-h. Similar calculations for  a music center give almost 8 kWt-h per month, for a videotape recorder - almost 4 kWt-h. Altogether, only for three devices - almost 21 kWt-h per month. 

2. Use voltage stabilizers. 

Having equipped your TV set with a stabilizer you can achieve a 2 -2,3 times decrease of power consumption.

3. Do not leave a mobile phone charger plugged to the socket. 

A mobile phone charger left plugged to the socket is heated even if the phone is not connected to it. This takes place because the device consumes electricity anyway. 95 % of energy is wasted in vain when a charger is connected to the socket constantly. 

4. To save electric energy on electric ranges it is necessary to use a ware with bottom equal to the ring diameter or exceeds it a little. 
When you use a ware which does not correspond to dimensions of the electric range, 5-10 % of energy are lost. A ware with a deformed bottom may cause an energy overconsumption uo to 40-60 %.
5. Use cook's ruses.
When cooking a meal close the pot with a lid, since quick water evaporating prolongs cooking time for 20-30%. After boiling of meal it is desirable to turn to low-temperature mode of cooking.

6. Descale your electric kettle in time. 

Scale forms as a result of repeated heating and boiling of water and has low heat conductivity, therefore, the water in a ware with scale is heated slowly.

7. Use washing machines efficiently

Do not exceed a norm of maximum load of linen. Avoid also incomplete loading of a washing machine: an overconsumption of electric energy in this case may amounts 10-15%. It is recommended to sort the linen every time before washing, and in a case of weak or medium degree of dirtying to refuse a preliminary washing. When an incorrect washing program is used an overconsumption of electric energy reaches up to 30 %.

8. To economize a little when ironing, do not iron overdried linen.

9. Clean your vacuum cleaner in time.

When a vacuum cleaner is used, a dust bag filled to one third worsens intake for 40 %. Correspondingly, electric energy consumption increases for the same value. 
10. Use refrigerators correctly. 

A refrigerator should be installed in the coolest place in the kitchen, desirably, near an external wall and on no account it should be placed near a kitchen range. If you will install a refrigerator in a room where the temperature reaches 30ºC then power consumption will increase twice A refrigerator should be opened as rarely as possible, in order not to permit the cold to leak out. Before putting warm products in a refrigerator they should get cool to a room temperature. It is necessary to defrost a freezer compartment when ice is built-up in it. A thick layer of ice worsens cooling of frozen products and increases electric energy consumption.

11. Use natural lighting as much as possible. 

Light curtains, light wallpapers and ceilings, clear windows, moderate quantity of plants on window-sills will increase illuminance of the flat and the office and will reduce the use of luminaires. It should be taken into account that dusty windows decrease a natural illuminance for 30 %.

12. Heating radiators will heat the room efficiently if behind them heat-reflecting screens will be installed and if the radiator will not be covered with thick curtains.  

Bonus Tip!

Exchange of incandescent lamps for modern energy-saving lamps can reduce electric energy consumption in a flat, on average, twice.
